Mercedes-Benz has always been on top of technologies. Mercedes-Benz INTELLIGENT DRIVE also includes a number of technologies especially configured for each model, improving driving and comfort. This year, the manufacturer continues to surprise its consumers with novelties - significantly improved smart LED lamps.
84 LEDs in each headlamp
LED headlamp technology with the name MULTIBEAM LED was first introduced in 2014 in the CLS model. Engineers used 24 LEDs in each headlamp, which, operating in various combinations, created an adjustable light beam. The goal of the system is perfect lighting of the road without blinding oncoming vehicles.
This year, Mercedes-Benz offers an improved MULTIBEAM LED version with 84 LEDs in each headlamp, making driving in the dark hours even safer and more pleasant.
Digital control
The new MULTIBEAM LED system is controlled by four electronic blocks calculating the optimum scenario for lighting the road 100 times per second. The blocks receive information from cameras located behind the windscreen.
Turning on HIGH BEAM ASSISTANT PLUS ensures the best conditions for driving with high beams without blinding oncoming vehicles.
If there is oncoming traffic on the road, the main LED module is partially turned off to avoid blinding other drivers. The rest of the road continues to be lit up by high beams.
If the system detects driving on an express road, it accordingly adjusts the shape of the light beam. Thus the high beams light up their own lane and do not blind the drivers of oncoming trucks, allowing them to concentrate on traffic in their lane.
By introducing the new MULTIBEAM LED, the modes of low and high beams in the Mercedes-Benz vehicles are operating completely electronically for the first time, i.e., LEDs turn on or off without any moving mechanisms in the headlamps. A function of active lamps also has electronic control for the first time in the automobile industry, creating better lighting of the road in the steering direction.
Individual mode for each driving situation
The light pattern automatically changes to the extent possible adjusting to the road and weather conditions.
Lighting the road is possible in a preventive mode in combination with COMAND ONLINE equipment and a camera integrated in the windscreen. The active system light up the upcoming curve on the road even before the driver has turned the steering wheel.
If COMAND-ONLINE equipment was installed for the vehicle, control of the headlamps may use the information from the navigation system for anticipated roundabouts, and light up the road with a broader beam before the vehicle enters the roundabout.
The city mode of the headlamps during driving with low speed creates an especially broad beam, lighting up dark pavements and other dangerous areas.
The light mode of poor weather conditions during the rain reduces deflection off the road on its opposite side. It is controlled by a special algorithm system, switching off some LEDs, thus avoiding the possibility of blinding oncoming vehicles.
A new functionality of the headlamps also ensures better lighting while driving on country roads, in other words, improvements were made to the curve lights and operation of the headlamps in fog.
